What is dopamine hunting?
Dopamine hunting is the pattern, common in ADHD, of chasing quick, high-stimulation sources of reward. A new notification, a new project, a new purchase, a new tab, because the ADHD brain's reward system doesn't register routine, effortful or delayed rewards as strongly as a neurotypical brain does.
It shows up as compulsive scrolling, switching tasks constantly, impulse spending, sugar or caffeine cycling, starting ten projects and finishing none, or seeking conflict, drama or risk simply because it generates a hit of engagement. None of this is about willpower. It's the brain seeking the neurochemical fuel it runs short on, through whatever channel is fastest.
Does ADHD cause low dopamine? What the research shows
Yes. The evidence for this is stronger and more specific than most articles on the topic let on.
The clearest evidence comes from Nora Volkow's PET imaging study at Brookhaven National Laboratory, which scanned 53 unmedicated adults with ADHD against 44 healthy controls. It found lower dopamine D2/D3 receptor levels and lower dopamine transporter levels in the accumbens and midbrain, the two brain regions most directly responsible for motivation and reward. The lower these markers were, the worse participants scored on measures of motivation, a direct link between the biology and the lived experience of ADHD.
Separate genetic research into the DRD2 gene (the reward deficiency line of research pioneered by Kenneth Blum) found the A1 allele, linked to lower dopamine receptor density, in 49 percent of children with ADHD compared with 27 percent of controls.
Put simply, the reward pathway itself runs low. It takes more stimulation to produce the same "worth it" signal a neurotypical brain generates from ordinary experience. That's the physiological root of dopamine hunting.
One layer of nuance is worth adding, because it changes how you manage it, not whether the core finding is real. Newer research, including a 2024 review from the University of Bergen, suggests dopamine release is uneven rather than uniformly low: lower at baseline, with sharper spikes in response to strong stimulation. In practice this means the ADHD brain isn't incapable of producing dopamine; it needs a bigger or more immediate trigger to do it. That's the hunting behaviour in question, playing out at the level of brain chemistry.

Why the ADHD brain chases rewards
Two things compound a low reward pathway into active hunting behaviour.
Novelty seeking
People with ADHD consistently score higher on novelty seeking measures across age groups and ADHD subtypes. Familiar, repetitive tasks generate barely enough dopamine to feel worth starting, so attention is pulled toward what's new, uncertain or stimulating instead.
Steep reward delay discounting
The ADHD brain devalues future or delayed rewards far more sharply than a neurotypical brain does. A payoff that's days or weeks away barely registers as worth acting on now, which pushes behaviour toward whatever pays off immediately.
Together, these explain the hunting instinct precisely: a reward system that runs low by default and is wired to demand novelty and immediacy just to fire at all.
Unhealthy vs healthy dopamine hunting
The hunting instinct itself isn't the problem. Where it points is. The same drive that fuels doomscrolling at 1am can just as easily fuel a workout, a new hobby, or a hard conversation finally had.

The difference isn't the presence of dopamine seeking. It's whether the behaviour compounds toward the life you want, or quietly erodes it.

Knowing the mechanism doesn't automatically change the behaviour. That's where coaching earns its place. A coach helps you:

- Build a dopamine menu that's actually yours, matched to your specific triggers, energy patterns, and what genuinely lights you up, not a generic list off the internet.
- Install the structure (accountability, tiered rewards, body doubling, timing) that makes the healthy option the easy option often enough that it starts to win by default.
- Course correct in real time, because a dopamine menu built once and never revisited goes stale, same as everything else your ADHD brain gets bored of.
